New Telephone System

November 1, 2007

Troy, AL - A new phone system has been put in place for key areas in Pike County Schools. The new system will allow for easier use and flexibility for the administrators and teachers. The system is integrated to the intercom system at each school to allow administrators easy communication throughtout the campus.

Upgraded Connectivity

June 15, 2007

Troy, AL - Pike County Schools have gotten a boost in network performance over the summer. The connections between switch's inside of each school have been upgraded to 1GBs access. Switch's have all gone to fiber connections and that will improve uptime for all classrooms by reducing possible failure due to old hardware.
With continuing need for audio and visual support in the classroom, the increased bandwidth will alleviate any slow connection between schools and classrooms.

Wireless network-Phase I complete

October 19, 2005

TROY, AL - Pike County Schools has recently completed phase I of its wireless network. The network utilizes the newest in wireless encryption/authentication.

The initial wireless network includes connections in the following locations:
Goshen High: Library, Lunchroom/Admin. Building, 700 building
    Goshen Elem.: Office/Library
    Banks Primary: Office/Main Building
    Banks Middle: Office Building
Pike County High: 100 and 200 buildings
Pike County Elementary: 200 building (Office)
    Bus-Shop: Technology/Maintenance Office
    Central Office: Entire building

For security reasons, a technician must configure each device that connects to the network. Generally, equipment not owned by Pike County Schools will not be connected to the wireless network. Only computers that the Technology Dept. controls, maintains, and provides anti-virus services to may connect to our wireless network. Older laptops in our schools may be upgraded for $49.99 with a wireless network card, if they meet the requirements (Windows 2000/XP.) All equipment should be inspected by a technician before a wireless card is purchased.

Maintenance moves to the digital age

August 23, 2005

TROY, AL - Pike County Schools Maintenance division has adopted a new software service to manage maintenance work requests. The new product, Maintenance Direct, allows teachers to submit maintenance requests through their computer. After the principal approves the request, the maintenance director assigns the work. Maintenance workers can access their work orders from any computer, anywhere. As the work is completed, the technician updates the work request and the teacher receives updates.

Teachers now have easy access to their work requests. They can submit new requests with a few mouse clicks and check the status anytime. The system allows the maintenance division to track their costs and their time, resulting in greater efficiency and accountability.

Pike County High School's new buildings are technology rich

August 23, 2005

BRUNDIDGE, AL - The two new classroom buildings on the PCHS campus represent a large investment in technology.

Building 100, completed in August 2004, houses a distance learning classroom, business academy computer center, and a 31 workstation instructional/research computer lab. Students at the high school have greater access to technology than ever before.

Building 200, completed in July 2005, includes 8 classrooms with a minimum of 3 computers each.

These two buildings are wired with over 60,000 feet of network cabling. Each classroom has the infrastructure to house a computer lab of its own.

Coinciding with these buildings, the campus received a new intercom system. The fiber optic, TV, intercom and telephone cabling connecting each of the school's buildings was moved into underground conduit. This move will protect the equipment from lightning strikes. Banks receives new computers in every classroom

August 23, 2005

BANKS, AL - Each classroom at Banks Primary and Middle School campuses received new computers over the summer. This investment puts a minimum of 4 computers in each classroom.

Each classroom received a new IBM ThinkCentre computer through a state technology grant. The other three computers were acquired from a school system in North Alabama.

In addition to 84 new computers, the schools are now using a new product called Renaissance Place. Renaissance Place combines Accelerated Reading, Math, Reading assessments, and Fluent Reading into one web-based product. This software system integrates the program and allows the school to track student progress in several subject areas.

Goshen High School receives new computer lab

August 23, 2005

GOSHEN, AL - Goshen High School has received 20 new IBM ThinkCentre computers that make up a new instruction/research lab. Classes have access to the lab to do research, write papers, and access instructional software on the network.

Included in the lab is a new, high speed HP Laserjet Printer. A teacher can have his or her entire class working on computers - all at once.

The new lab comes from the work of several groups: the vocational program at the high school built the countertops, the maintenance department did the electrical wiring, and the technology department did the network wiring and computer configuration.

Server Consolidation plan completed

July 1, 2005

TROY, AL - After one year of planning and work, the technology department has completed a plan that reduces the number of servers required to operate the network from 27 to 16. Sixteen servers now handle the same work load that 27 handled previously.

The 16 new Dell Power Edge 2650 Servers are more powerful and reliable than the old system. This means less maintenance cost/time and less power consumption when compared to managing 27 of the older servers.
